STORY

MORI KOUGEI specializes in creating intricate wood grain patterns with its own technique,

and has focused on developing products that take advantage of this technique. In 2020, MORI KOUGEI launched its own original product, “RAYS TRAY.”「」It has been used by a wide range of people as it enhances the quality of their lives.

We have received practical questions about RAYS TRAY, such as "Can I serve food directly on the tray?” “Is it possible to wash it with water?” and so on.

We have listened to our customers and given the tray a simpler design.

ou can choose from 2 types of finishes: a new “CERAWOOD” coating with enhanced water and heat resistance, or a natural Japanese lacquer finish that evokes the traditions of Japan.

Both finishes are suitable for serving food directly on it and are washable with water for easy daily cleaning. MORI KOUGEI's PLATE is a product that will transform your everyday dining experience into something special and enrich your life every time you use it. It is not just a vessel.

About Natural Japanese Lacquer (Urushi)

The Japanese lacquer-finished PLATE is a masterpiece of traditional Japanese craftsmanship, created in collaboration with “Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi” in Kyoto.

The delicate grain of the tsuki-ita wood veneer plate harmonizes with the deep luster of the natural Japanese lacquer to create a unique presence. The PLATE which is only manufactured by MORI KOUGEI and Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi, has the unique characteristics of a lacquer that make it more attractive the more it is used. And it is both easy to use every day and durable over the long term.

This PLATE is the result of skilled craftsmanship and originality in its form and functionality. It is designed to add quiet brightness to a sophisticated dining space and blend naturally into any setting. We have created a one-of-a-kind product that will accompany your daily dining table and add a touch of flair to your special occasions.

About Indigo Dyeing

The Aizome-finished PLATE is dyed with the “Hakko-date" dyeing method using natural indigo, which is well-known as a traditional specialty of Tokushima. This is a joint work by MORI KOUGEI and “Watanabe's” workshop which consistently carries out the entire process from indigo cultivation to dyeing.

The water- and heat-resistant CERAWOOD coating is ideal for daily use, and the indigo-dyeing process brings vibrant colors that deepen with use. PLATE, with its natural wood texture and unique beauty that can be enjoyed as it ages, makes everyday meals even more special, both as art to add color to the dining table and as a practical vessel.

 

Kosen-bari (ray of light pasting method)

The wood is sliced into thin strips, and the strips are cut into triangles and pasted together around the center to create a pattern that looks like rays of light radiating from the center.

The wood then has the characteristic of appearing different colors depending on the angle of light and the direction in which it is viewed.

This delicate and sophisticated design is also attractive because it shows different expressions depending on the way the light hits it.

 

Wood Marquetryarquetry

Marquetry is the technique of inlaying wood without gaps.

This traditional craft technique utilizes the natural beauty of wood to create intricate patterns and designs, it has long been loved around the world and has developed uniquely in each culture.

MORI KOUGEI is highly skilled in marquetry using Tsuki-ita (wood veneer).

Original illustrations and logos are delicately rendered in the grain of the wood, and fine details can be inlaid without gaps and with high precision. Each piece has its own unique depth and story.

MORI KOUGEI's marquetry creates a unique aesthetic value by adding a modern interpretation to traditional techniques, and its charm shines through in a wide variety of spaces.

[Wood Type]

・White Sycamore (with Kosen-bari)

White Sycamore is a wood with a characteristic luster pattern (shrinkage) that crosses the grain vertically. The patterns created by taking advantage of the luster pattern (shrinkage) are made even more beautifully apparent by indigo dyeing and natural Japanese lacquer, and delicate designs like ripples spreading when a drop falls on the surface of water appear on the PLATE.

 

・Manggasinoro（Wood Marquetry）

The wood has a slight sheen and is brightly colored after slicing but darkens with sun exposure. It is one of the most popular South Sea species and has a wide range of uses in furniture, fittings, construction and plywood.

Product Handling

-Wipe with a dry cloth after rinsing to prevent possible erosion of the topcoat due to minor scratches or damage.

-Avoid storing the wood while wet as it may cause splitting or deformation of the wood.

-Do not store in places where temperature and humidity change frequently or in direct sunlight.

-Please note that the color of the image and the color of the actual product may look slightly different depending on depending on the nature of your computer monitor.

-The grain and color of each piece differs due to the use of natural wood.

-The finish is done by hand, so there may be minute differences.

-Please note that we do not accept returns unless the product is defective.

-Dried and hardened natural lacquer will not cause a rash, but in very rare cases, allergic symptoms may occur. In such cases, please consult a specialist.

Q1: What is CERAWOOD coating?
A1: CERAWOOD is a high-performance ceramic coating based on urethane resin with ultra-fine particle composites. We chose this for the finish because it is important not to spoil the texture of the wood, while at the same time considering its practicality as tableware. It is more resistant to heat, stains, and UV rays than typical urethane paint finishes. Of course, it also complies with food hygiene regulations.
 
Q2: Can PLATE be washed in water?
A2: It can be washed in water. However, since the topcoat may be eroded by small scratches or damage, wipe with a dry cloth after rinsing.
 
Q3: Can this PLATE be washed in a dishwasher?
A3: Hand washing is recommended. Due to the delicacy of wood products, please avoid using a dishwasher and wash by hand gently.
 
Q4: Can it be used in a microwave oven?
A4: PLATE is made of natural wood and is not suitable for microwave use.Q5: Is it safe to store the product in direct sunlight?
A5: Direct sunlight can cause the wood to crack, deform, and color fade-out, so please keep it out of direct sunlight.

A6: We can repair minor scratches on the topcoat Japanese natural lacquer or CERAWOOD, but we cannot repair deep scratches, cracks, or distortions.

A7: Yes, it is highly heat-resistant and can be used for hot dishes. However, please refrain from using it at high temperatures that may burn the wood (e.g., contact with a hot griddle, iron kettle, etc.).
