Ichimatsu Pattern – KŌSHI

KŌSHI (lattice) is a Marquetry series that embodies balance and order.
The alternating arrangement of square elements creates the traditional Japanese “ichimatsu” checkered pattern, a design long rooted in Japanese spatial culture.

This piece is crafted using Japanese cedar, known for its clear, lustrous grain unique to Japan.
Cedar carries delicate annual rings within its soft texture, and its grain gently shifts in appearance depending on the angle of light.

By crossing the direction of the grain, subtle contrasts in light and shadow emerge—even within the same wood species—creating refined variations within a unified composition.
Though minimal in decoration, the natural beauty of the material quietly stands out.

Calculated Handcraft Beyond Machinery

This tray is created by MORI KOUGEI, a Tokushima-based workshop specializing in veneer craftsmanship for three generations.
Drawing on extensive experience in decorative plywood for furniture and architecture, the workshop has established an artistic approach of “drawing patterns with wood.”

Determining the precise angles of joining, the flow of the grain, and the unique character of each material requires the trained eye and skill of experienced artisans.
Each piece is carefully finished by hand, relying on tactile sensitivity that mass production cannot replicate.

A Rectangle That Integrates Seamlessly into Space

The practicality unique to the rectangular form:

  • Place bread and a cup for breakfast

  • Coordinate with your favorite tableware

  • Use at the entrance or on a shelf for keys, vases, or incense holders

  • Pair with plants or objects as part of your interior styling

With the beauty and stability of straight lines, it offers a size and presence that integrates naturally into everyday living.

The Beauty of Carefully Selected Natural Wood

Each piece carries its own unique expression, creating a completely different impression even within the same design.

Why It Is Chosen as a Gift

Presented in a refined, dedicated package, it is well received as a wedding gift, housewarming gift, or an international present.
This piece, reflecting the warmth of natural wood and Japanese craftsmanship, quietly conveys the giver’s sentiments.

About Indigo Dyeing

Indigo dyeing is a traditional Japanese technique using natural dye materials.
Its deep blue is not merely a color, but the result of layered applications that build depth over time.

When indigo is applied to wood, the texture of the grain and annual rings subtly emerge, and the tone shifts gently depending on the light. Rather than covering the surface uniformly, the dye preserves the natural “breath” of the wood, resulting in unique expressions in each piece.

The blue of indigo deepens with use, developing a calm and refined character over time.
It is a quiet, profound color born from the meeting of natural material and traditional craft.
