Every Angle Tells a Different Story.

Every piece of wood tells a story — and in this clock, the story changes as you move. Irregularly hexagonal wood veneers are fitted together using the traditional wood inlay technique, with the grain direction of each piece precisely offset. Every tile is the same wood, the same colour — yet as the light shifts, or as you shift, the face shimmers and changes. This is why it is called hoek: the Dutch word for viewpoint, or angle.

The Art of Wood Inlay

Wood inlay is a traditional craft technique in which pieces of wood are fitted seamlessly into one another. In this clock, identically shaped hexagonal veneers are arranged across the full face of the clock, each piece rotated so that its grain runs in a different direction from its neighbours. Using entirely the same wood species and colour, the arrangement creates an optical effect: from certain angles, individual tiles appear to glow, as if the surface were lit from within.

The Ray Figure of Japanese Oak

The wood used throughout is Nara (Japanese Oak). Nara contains a ray tissue called fu — a medullary ray figure that runs independently from the grain, with its own distinctive lustre. Depending on the angle of view, certain pieces of wood appear to catch the light and shine silver. The optical effect of the wood inlay pattern and the radial shimmer of the fu layer together — giving the CLOCK -HOEK- a depth that goes beyond simple geometry.

Two Finishes — Nara and Indigo Dyed

Nara (Natural)
A warm, bright natural colour. The fu's lustre reads as a soft silver shimmer across the hexagonal face — adding natural depth and dimension to the geometric pattern.

Nara Indigo Dyed
Japanese Oak dyed using the traditional fermentation-vat indigo method of Tokushima. Unlike White Sycamore — where indigo interacts with a ripple figure — Nara has no ripple figure. Instead, the fu retains its lustre within the deep indigo, creating a radial shimmer that reads as light within darkness. A quiet, powerful surface — unlike anything in White Sycamore indigo.

The Hands — Another Piece of Craft

The hands are an original MORIKOUGEI design. Built from a proprietary laminated veneer with an ebony veneer surface, the grain directions of each layer are crossed to minimise the effects of humidity and temperature change — a durable, considered finish that extends to every detail of the clock.

Silence That Keeps Time

The clock uses a QUARTZ sweep movement (Young Town) with no audible tick. It keeps time without intruding on the room — equally suited to a bedroom, a study, or a living space. CE marked, RoHS compliant, WEEE directive compliant.

A Gift Worth Giving

Each clock is presented in a simple, premium gift box. Chosen often as a housewarming gift, wedding present, or birth celebration — a clock made by hand from natural wood carries a quiet permanence that few gifts can match.
