MORI KOUGEI's Non-Combustible Wood Veneer Panels — Where Design Meets Safety

What is TSUKI-ITA PANELS

Developed for architectural spaces where non-combustible certification is required,
TSUKI-ITA PANELS is a non-combustible decorative wood veneer panel
compliant with the Building Standards Act of Japan —
designed so that high-design expressions such as marquetry and indigo dyeing
can be specified exactly as intended.

Rather than treating fire safety as a constraint,
MORI KOUGEI begins with design expression as the premise,
and builds non-combustible performance around it.

Not designed for mass production —
this is a material for architects and designers
who engage with the specific intent of each project.

For architects who have had to give up wood finishes
in hotels, commercial facilities, brand boutiques,
and other spaces subject to non-combustible interior regulations —

TSUKI-ITA PANELS is the option that meets safety standards
without surrendering design freedom.

Two Formats

TSUKI-ITA PANELS is available in two formats,
suited to the scale of the space and the method of installation.

Tile Format

A fixed-size format installed like tiles.
Available in standard sizes from 100×100mm to 600×600mm.

Designed to be easy for architects to specify and easy for contractors to install.
Non-combustible performance is available with the Dailite substrate option.

Available sizes:
100×100 / 150×150 / 50×300 /
100×300 / 150×300 / 300×300 /
450×450 / 600×600 (mm)

Large Format

A large-scale format customized to the dimensions
and design intent of the site.

Starting from a dialogue with the designer,
we work together to create the expression that best fits each space.

Maximum dimensions:
1225×2440mm / 925×3030mm

Technology & Structure

A balance of beauty and performance, made possible by technology.

The substrate is Dailite (volcanic glass composite board), 6mm thick.
Through MORI KOUGEI's proprietary laminate construction and finishing techniques,
stable non-combustible performance is achieved
even while incorporating wood veneer — an organic material.

Tested and certified for non-combustibility (heat release and gas toxicity)
by the Japan Building Research Institute.
Certified as Non-Combustible Material by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (NM-6060).

  • Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism — Non-Combustible Certification: NM-6060

  • Non-combustibility test passed at the Japan Building Research Institute

  • Laminate design achieving non-combustibility in a construction that includes organic materials

  • Designed for application to high-design expressions including indigo dyeing and marquetry

Design first. Safety performance built around it.
That is MORI KOUGEI's approach.

Design Philosophy

TSUKI-ITA PANELS is not simply a material —
it is positioned as a participant in the design process.

Grain direction, species, color, pattern of application —
the combinations are endless,
and the right expression is developed together
in response to the rhythm, light, shadow, and scale of each space.

Design is not something to be selected from a catalog.
It is a freedom to be shaped together.

Starting from the veneer application patterns MORI KOUGEI has developed over the years,
we can accommodate fully original designs.

Pattern Examples

Algorithm × Craft

Space-specific design, realized through the intersection of digital technology and handcraft.

We begin by listening to the designer's vision,
then use algorithmic design to develop structured patterns —
repetition, symmetry, rhythm —
that are then realized in actual wood veneer by the hands of our craftspeople.

Drawn by computation. Made by hand.
Where contemporary technology meets traditional craft,
expressions emerge that exist nowhere else.

The videos and pattern examples below offer a glimpse of what is possible.

Wood Species & Finishes

Choose from a range of materials to suit the tone and intent of the space.

We work with a wide selection of domestic and international fine woods,
and indigo dyeing is also available.

How to Order

The TSUKI-ITA PANELS ordering process is designed to integrate smoothly into the design workflow.

  1. Inquiry
Tell us about your intended use, space, and design intent.
Please reach out via the contact form or email.

  2. Consultation
We confirm the installation area, wood species, and design direction.

  3. Design Development
We work together on pattern proposals, species selection, and composition.

  4. Prototype & Review
A sample is produced for your review and approval.

  5. Production & Delivery

FAQ

Q: Can you send us a sample?
A: We do not provide complimentary samples.
If you need to verify the actual grain or color of the wood,
A4-size wood veneer sheets are available for purchase.
Please order from the link below.

For projects at a more concrete stage,
final confirmation samples may be available upon request — please inquire.

Q: Can any wood species be selected? Is stock available?
A: The species listed on our wood species page represent those we have worked with previously.
Stock quantity, width, and length vary by species,
so please consult with us once your required quantity and dimensions are confirmed.

Commonly used species such as oak and walnut offer the most options.
As specifications become more specific, choices narrow —
but we will guide you to the best solution available.

Please note that as a natural material,
color and grain vary between individual pieces of the same species.

Q: To what extent is non-combustible performance guaranteed?
A: As a non-combustible material certified by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (NM-6060),
the panels meet the non-combustibility requirements of the Building Standards Act of Japan.
For details on the scope and conditions of the certification, please contact us.

Q: Where can the panels be used?
A: The panels are suitable for interior finishing applications such as walls and ceilings.
Requirements vary depending on design conditions and installation environment —
please consult with us during the design phase.

Q: Can patterns and design be customized?
A: Yes. We work together with you on species selection, veneer application direction, and design patterns
to align with the intent of each project.

Q: What is the maximum panel size?
A: We can accommodate up to 1225×2440mm or 925×3030mm.
Please consult with us based on site dimensions and installation method.

Q: What sizes are available for indigo dyeing?
A: This depends on the dyeing method.

Traditional fermentation vat (ash lye fermentation)
The traditional method using natural indigo.
Due to the limitations of the dye vessel,
the current maximum is approximately 600mm on the short side and 1100mm on the long side.
Some color preference can be accommodated,
but slight variation may occur due to the condition of the dye and the nature of the wood.

Precipitated indigo
An alternative natural indigo dyeing method that allows for relatively larger panel sizes.
Color control is more consistent,
though variation due to dye condition and wood characteristics still occurs.
When multiple panels are installed side by side (e.g., on a wall surface),
some variation between individual panels should be expected.

Q: What happens if the surface is scratched or stained?
A: As a natural wood product, repair of scratches is often difficult.
Stain resistance varies by finish type,
so we recommend discussing the appropriate finish for your intended use and environment during the design phase.
