Choose Your Type
TSUKI-JIRI WOOD PLATE is made from the same oak timber across all four types — what differs is the finish. Because the grain of each piece is unique, every plate is one of a kind regardless of type. The finish is what shapes the look, feel, and price of each.
Flat
The wood itself takes centre stage. The grain and the fu — the medullary ray figure that shimmers silver depending on the angle — are presented as they are, letting oak's inherent beauty speak for itself. Simple and versatile, a natural first choice.
Indigo Dyed (Flat)
A flat plate hand-dyed using natural indigo through the traditional Hakko-date (fermentation-vat) method, long practised in Tokushima. Against the deep indigo ground, the fu retains its lustre and stands out even more vividly. Applying natural indigo to solid wood — considered more difficult than dyeing cloth — gives this type its depth and distinction.
Ridged
Hand-carved by Masahiro Ikawa — known as Sandaime Horimasa, third-generation master carver — using chisels, one plate at a time. The result is a wave-like relief across the surface; because no two passes of a chisel are identical, the light and shadow shift with every angle. A double one-of-a-kind: the wood's own character, layered with the craftsman's hand. ※ IKAWA sculpture
Ridged & Indigo Dyed
The flagship: hand-carved and hand-dyed with natural indigo. Three distinct characters converge on a single board — the grain unique to that tree, the shadow carved by the artisan's chisel, and the depth drawn out by the indigo.
[What does "Tsuki-Jiri" mean?]
Veneer (tsuki-ita) is made by selecting timber with beautiful grain and slicing it into thin sheets. The solid plank left over from that slicing process is called the tsuki-jiri.
Hundreds of veneer sheets are stacked and bundled, with solid planks — the tsuki-jiri, typically 10 to 20mm thick — sandwiching the stack for delivery. Ordinarily, those planks are set aside and left unused.
But the tsuki-jiri is equally fine, carefully selected timber. The piece that couldn't become veneer — the leftover — is what TSUKI-JIRI WOOD PLATE is made from.
[How is it finished?]
To preserve the natural feel of the wood while providing the durability needed for everyday use, each plate is finished with a urethane-based topcoat called Cerawood.
Cerawood is a protective coating developed specifically for wooden products, with properties that resist moisture, staining, and UV light — a finish suited to daily use.
Products with the same Cerawood specification have passed food contact evaluation testing based on EU standards.
This plate is intended for tableware use with room-temperature to warm foods (not hot).
※ For indigo-dyed variants: colour and tone are intentionally varied, reflecting the natural character of the wood and dye.
[How do you use it?]
TSUKI-JIRI WOOD PLATE is made to sit alongside your everyday table — a piece of wooden tableware for daily life. The simple design means it can be styled and arranged any way you like.
A square plate is a quiet accent on a table full of round ones. Use it for Japanese dishes — an appetiser, a sweet, a sake cup alongside — and let it bring colour to your everyday table.
It also works well outside Japanese contexts: with charcuterie, cheese, nuts, or dessert. Pair it with a single flower in a small vase or an object you love, and it becomes something to arrange a space around.
