Flat cut describes the cut, not the species

Flat-cut grain results from the position and angle at which wood is cut. It generally forms cathedral-like peaks or arcs, giving a different impression from the straighter grain of quarter-cut wood. Reading “mahogany” as the wood name and “flat cut” as the cutting method makes the product name easier to understand. Columbia Forest Products Wood Species 101

Deciding where the curves should fall

When using flat-cut veneer on a box lid or panel, you can change the composition by placing the broadest part of the pattern in the center or toward an edge. Make paper templates of the rectangles, circles, or other shapes you need, then consider how much of the grain you want to retain. A narrow border and a broad surface may call for quite different parts of the same pattern.

Another choice is whether the grain should flow vertically or spread horizontally. On a piece with several faces, you might align the grain on all the sides or introduce a contrast between the lid and sides. There is no single right arrangement. Lay the pieces out before gluing and view them from the direction in which the finished object will be used.

Understanding the mahogany name

The name mahogany is used for woods in the genus Swietenia and for woods in the genus Khaya, known as African mahogany, among others. A single species identification and the actual country of harvest have not been confirmed for this product, so this article focuses on its trade name and flat-cut character. Our separate product named “Mahogany” is sold as African mahogany. USDA Wood Handbook, Chapter 1

Choose a size that leaves room for the grain

MORI KOUGEI's A4 sheet measures 210 × 297 mm and is approximately 0.25 mm thick, with industrial washi paper laminated to natural wood veneer. It is a thin decorative facing that brings the appearance of wood to a substrate. Rather than being carved or shaped through its thickness like solid timber, it is intended to be bonded to a prepared surface. MORI KOUGEI Flat-Cut Mahogany A4 Veneer Sheet

Possible uses include covering furniture edges, repairing flat wooden surfaces, and marquetry. For repairs, check the direction and color of the existing grain. Two flat-cut pieces will not necessarily share the same pattern, so deciding in advance whether to blend in a small patch or reface an entire section will help you picture the result. Prepare a flat substrate and test the compatibility of the adhesive and finish on an offcut before beginning. The photographs are a guide to the character of flat-cut grain, not a promise of an identical pattern or color. Leave room to enjoy deciding where the grain of your own sheet will sit.
