Indigo-Dyed Oak: Blue Color and the Light of Ray Figure
Wood Dictionary
There is more to indigo-dyed oak than its blue color. The markings within the oak grain change character with the direction of the light. Even with the same kind of dyeing, a different underlying wood creates a different surface. This material invites you to enjoy wood structure and dyed color together.

See oak grain through indigo color
Indigo-Dyed Oak is a product category in which oak has been given an indigo color. Unlike materials chosen for their natural brown or pale-brown tones, it shows the wood's lines and markings within a blue surface. Reading nara as information about the wood and indigo-dyed as information about its treatment makes the difference from undyed oak or another dyed wood clearer. MORI KOUGEI: Indigo-dyed oak A4 sheets
Tiger stripes reveal the wood's structure
Quarter-sawn oak is known for its prominent broad rays. The distinctive markings called torafu, or tiger stripes, in Japanese oak arise when this radial tissue is exposed at the surface. Separate from the lengthwise flow of the growth rings, these markings catch attention differently as the viewing angle changes. MORI KOUGEI's product description also highlights the luster of the dyed oak's rays. USDA Wood Handbook: Oak timbers / MORI KOUGEI: Indigo-dyed oak A4 sheets
The size, number and position of the markings, as well as the depth of the indigo color, vary from sheet to sheet. A large ray marking in a photograph does not promise the same position or area in another sheet. Use the photographs as a reference for oak's characteristic structure, not as a selection of a fixed pattern. MORI KOUGEI: Indigo-dyed oak A4 sheets
How it differs from our other Indigo-Dyed product
Our product called Indigo-Dyed uses white sycamore, a different underlying wood from Indigo-Dyed Oak. Even when the colors are similar, a fine-textured or figured surface and a surface that emphasizes oak rays bring different character to a design. Rather than choosing only by depth of blue, consider how the grain lines or the presence of ray markings will work in the finished piece. Color and pattern, even on a small surface
The A4 sheet measures 210 × 297 mm and is approximately 0.25 mm thick, with natural wood veneer backed by industrial washi paper. It can be used for small box lids, decorative faces, furniture edges and wood inlay. Against the background of Tokushima's living indigo tradition, it offers a way to introduce color to a wood surface. When bonding or finishing, test compatibility on the actual materials and check the resulting color and luster as you proceed. Do not assume the dyed color will remain unchanged; consider the intended location and finish together. MORI KOUGEI: Indigo-dyed oak A4 sheets / Tokushima Prefecture: Awa indigo
