Why these two?

The flat plate shows Japanese oak as it is. Its grain and the fu — the medullary ray figure that shimmers silver depending on the angle — are left exactly as the wood grew. No dye, no treatment beyond a protective coat. Just the wood's own face.

The indigo-dyed plate is the same Japanese oak, taken somewhere else entirely. Hand-dyed using natural indigo through the traditional Hakko-date (fermentation-vat) method — a craft long practised in Tokushima — the grain still shows through the deep blue ground, giving the wood a quiet, layered depth.

Same species, same size. But placed side by side, they carry completely different presences. This isn't "choose one or the other." It's a pair that completes itself.

What is TSUKI-JIRI?

Wood veneer (tsuki-ita) is made by selecting timber with beautiful grain and slicing it thin. In the process of that slicing, planks of a certain thickness are produced — these are the tsuki-jiri. For the standard TSUKI-JIRI WOOD PLATE, 12mm planks are used. The Petite Plate is made from planks that come in at around 8mm — slightly thinner, but selected with the same care.

Carefully chosen timber, given its own role. Small in size; the same in spirit. Every piece is unique — and so is every set.

How to use it

A plate for a sweet, a biscuit, a small bite. A stand for a sake cup or small vessel. A tray for a ring or something worth setting apart. Use one, use both — arrange them freely.

With two plates on the same table, the wood's natural warmth and the still depth of indigo sit side by side. No matching, no set rules. Just two different moods of the same material.

Package

Each plate arrives in its own purpose-made box, presented together as a set. The simple, considered packaging is ready to give as it arrives — suitable for housewarmings, weddings, birthdays, or any occasion worth a thoughtful present.

[Care & handling notes]

Please read the following before use.

  • Handle with care — excessive impact may cause damage.
  • Wash with a soft sponge and mild dish soap.
  • Not suitable for use in microwave ovens, dishwashers, or refrigerators. Avoid use at high temperatures.
  • Contact with iron in wet conditions may cause discolouration.
  • Do not leave in direct sunlight for extended periods.
  • Do not soak in water — this may cause staining, warping, or cracking.
  • Grain and colour vary between pieces. Knots and tonal variations are part of the natural character of the wood.
  • Intended for use with room-temperature to warm foods (not hot).
  • For the indigo-dyed plate: once cured, the finish does not transfer colour. Please note that slight variations in tone and depth are a natural quality of the wood and dye.
