About PENTA – DRIFT
PENTA – DRIFT is a one-of-a-kind series born from a structure built on the pentagon as its base unit.
Rather than a regular grid,
the composition continues with a subtle, persistent drift —
so that the flow of the grain and the shape of each piece seem to spread through the space as if adrift.
The same unit repeats, yet the angle and grain direction shift incrementally,
generating an organic movement and oscillation
across a surface that should, by all logic, be still.
It is precisely because the pentagon carries an imperfect symmetry
that a rhythm closer to nature emerges — one that balance alone could never produce.
Depending on the angle of light and the position of the viewer,
the flow of the grain connects and breaks apart,
bringing multiple directions and a sense of depth to the surface.
A structure that uses geometry, yet never closes into perfect order.
An expression that exists only as a one-of-a-kind work —
sustained by the way material and composition oscillate against each other.
About This Piece

Wood Species
Approximately 30 species of natural wood veneer are used in this piece.
From cream white to deep brown,
species of differing tone, figuring, and sheen fill the surface as pentagonal units.
Even within the same composition, which species appears in which position differs with every piece —
the diversity of the materials itself generates the richness of the pattern.
Precision Handcraft — Beyond the Reach of Machines
This tray is made by MORI KOUGEI, a workshop based in Tokushima that has specialized in wood veneer work for three generations. Drawing on decades of expertise in decorative panels for furniture and architecture, the atelier has established an artistic approach to drawing with wood.
Reading the angle of each join, the direction of the grain, the character of each species — none of this can be done without the experience and skill of a trained craftsperson.
Each piece is finished with care, relying on the sensitivity of the hand — work that mass production cannot replicate.
