One of a Kind Rays Tray|ISŌ No.2660

A grain-born expression that can never be recreated.

This is a one-of-a-kind work — never to be reproduced.
Even with the same composition, no two pieces share the same face.
The wood grain and the combination of materials ensure that every piece is entirely its own.

About ISŌ – RAYS

ISŌ – RAYS is a special one-of-a-kind series that stands above the Rays Tray series.

Where standard RAYS creates its radial flow through grain direction and the radial application technique,
ISŌ – RAYS goes further — layering a symmetric bookmatch structure over that radial foundation,
so that the pattern is built from the inherent order and phase of the grain itself.

Against the radial flow expanding outward from the center,
symmetrically placed figuring and grain respond in kind,
and a structure of quiet equilibrium and depth emerges across the entire surface.

As the light shifts and the viewing angle changes,
a structure that had been latent within the material rises to the surface —
transforming from mere pattern into something that feels like structure itself.

This is not a designed decoration.
It is an expression drawn out from the order latent within the material —
one that can only exist as a one-of-a-kind work.

About This Piece

· A rare one-of-a-kind piece in camphor (kusunoki) burl veneer, developed through radial application and bookmatching
· Four-directional symmetric expansion transforms the eye-shaped grain into flower, ring, and star patterns
· A repeating pattern that emerges naturally from the symmetry of the material — not from design
· A complex, organic tone of warm brown crossed with dark eye-shaped figuring
· The contrast of the sapele edge board draws the overall composition together
· Camphor burl is a rare material — no two pieces will ever share the same expression
· Even within the same composition, each piece reads differently through the individuality of its grain

Wood Species

This piece uses camphor (kusunoki) burl veneer.
Burl figuring is a complex pattern of swirls and eyes that forms when a tree grows under unusual conditions.
With the radial application as its axis — expanding outward from the center —
a further layer of bookmatching and symmetric expansion is added,
so that the organic order within the grain spreads across the entire surface as a coherent, repeating pattern.

Sapele is used for the edge board.
Its deep reddish-brown tone and distinctive ribbon figure draw together the warm brown of the camphor burl,
lending the piece as a whole a sense of tension and refinement.

Precision Handcraft — Beyond the Reach of Machines

This tray is made by MORI KOUGEI, a workshop based in Tokushima that has specialized in wood veneer work for three generations. Drawing on decades of expertise in decorative panels for furniture and architecture, the atelier has established an artistic approach to drawing with wood.

Reading the angle of each join, the direction of the grain, the character of each species — none of this can be done without the experience and skill of a trained craftsperson.

Each piece is finished with care, relying on the sensitivity of the hand — work that mass production cannot replicate.

The Rectangle — A Form That Lives in Any Space

The Versatility of a Rectangular Tray

· A morning tray for bread and a cup
· A curated arrangement of your favorite vessels
· A resting place for keys, a vase, or incense at the entryway or on a shelf
· Paired with plants or objects as part of a living arrangement

The clean lines and inherent stability of this form make it easy to bring into daily life —
a piece with both quiet presence and practical scale.

The Beauty of Carefully Selected Natural Wood

Each piece carries its own distinct expression.
Even within the same design, the impression shifts entirely from one piece to the next.
