An Idea Born from Light Itself
Every piece of wood tells a story — and in the Rectangle RaysTray, that story unfolds across straight lines and open form. Natural wood veneers are hand-cut into triangles and laid in a radial pattern using MORIKOUGEI's signature Kōsen-bari technique, creating a surface that shifts with every angle and every ray of light. A quiet radiance, shaped for everyday life.
The Geometry of Handcraft
MORIKOUGEI has devoted three generations to the art of wood veneer craftsmanship in Tokushima, Japan — elevating the precision techniques of architectural and furniture veneering into fine objects for daily life. Each tray is made one by one by hand, with the artisan carefully reading the grain direction, angle, and individual character of every piece of wood. The result is a quiet intensity that no mass production can replicate.
The Rectangle: A Shape That Lives With You
The clean lines and balanced proportions of the rectangle bring a natural sense of order to any space.
- Bread and a cup for breakfast
- A curated arrangement of favourite ceramics
- Keys, a small vase, or incense in the entryway
- A base for plants or objects in an interior vignette
At 250 × 365 mm, it offers a versatility that round trays cannot — fitting neatly into shelves, sideboards, and table settings where a circular form would feel out of place.
Six Finishes, Six Expressions
Each wood species carries its own character; each finish draws that character into the light. Choose the one that speaks to you.
Japanese Oak (Nara)
The ray figure of the oak shifts softly with the light — gentle, luminous, and calm. Please note that this wood species uses a different veneer layout, making it a distinctly special piece within the collection.
Ebony
A rich, deep black with subtle stripe figure — heavy, lustrous, and commanding. One of the world's most prized wood species.
Ash (Tamo)
Warm and unpretentious, with a clean, clearly defined grain.
White Sycamore
A soft shimmer from the ripple figure — delicate and quietly elegant.
White Ash
Bright and clean, with a lightness that lifts any space. Sourced from North America.
Indigo Dyed
Dyed using the traditional fermentation-vat indigo method of Tokushima. The deep indigo brings the wood grain into sharp relief — and continues to develop beautifully over time.
A Gift Worth Giving
Each tray arrives in a dedicated premium gift box. Chosen often as a wedding gift, housewarming present, or a gift for friends and colleagues abroad — the warmth of natural wood and the quiet skill of Japanese craftsmanship speak where words fall short.
