Wooden Tableware That Enriches Everyday Living
poke, a brand developing products under the theme of “making things with wood veneer,”
has begun offering a new collection of limited-edition works.
These pieces are made using MORI KOUGEI’s original laminated wood material,
created by layering ultra-thin natural wood veneers (0.5mm–1.5mm thick)
to form delicate and colorful striped patterns entirely from the natural colors of wood.
Various wood species are used — including ebony for the black tones and bloodwood for the red tones —
many of which are now rare and difficult to obtain.
As a result, these colorful laminated wood materials can no longer be recreated in the same way,
making every piece truly one of a kind.
For example, to create a 50mm-thick material using 0.5mm veneer,
100 individual layers of wood must be laminated together.
Each sheet is carefully layered one by one to avoid bonding defects,
making these small works highly time-intensive and impossible to mass produce.
The surface is coated only lightly,
just enough to protect the piece without diminishing the natural texture of the wood.
Rather than creating a glossy finish like plastic products,
each piece is carefully finished so that the warmth and tactile quality of real wood can still be fully felt when held in the hand.
