Every piece of wood tells a story — and in the Rays Tray, that story is written in light. Natural wood veneers are hand-cut into triangles and laid in a radial pattern using MORIKOUGEI's signature Kōsen-bari technique, creating a surface that shifts with every angle and every ray of light.

At 44 cm (approx. 17") in diameter, the Round L is as versatile as it is striking. Use it as a dining tray or serving board at the table, as a display surface in an entryway or living room, or simply placed on the floor as a sculptural accent. Its generous scale gives the radial pattern room to breathe — equally at home as an everyday object and as a statement piece.
The Geometry of Handcraft
MORIKOUGEI has devoted three generations to the art of wood veneer craftsmanship in Tokushima, Japan — elevating the precision techniques of architectural and furniture veneering into fine objects for daily life. Each tray is made one by one by hand, with the artisan carefully reading the grain direction and angle of every individual piece of wood. The result is a quiet intensity that no mass production can replicate.
Six Finishes, Six Expressions
Each wood species carries its own character; each finish draws that character into the light. Choose the one that speaks to you.
Ebony
A rich, deep black with subtle stripe figure — heavy, lustrous, and commanding.
Ash (Tamo)
Warm and unpretentious, with a clean, clearly defined grain.
White Sycamore
A soft shimmer from the ripple figure — delicate and quietly elegant.
White Ash
Bright and clean, with a lightness that lifts any space.
Indigo Dyed
Dyed using the traditional fermentation-vat indigo method of Tokushima. The deep indigo brings the wood grain into sharp relief — especially striking at this scale.
Zelkova
One of Japan's most prized wood species. A warm, golden-toned grain with calm depth — its bold character comes fully alive in the large-format radial pattern.
