One of a Kind RAYS PLATE – ISŌ No.2614
One of a Kind

At first glance, a quiet presence.

Yet within it lies a structure that reveals itself through light.

This piece is a one-of-a-kind creation.
Even with the same composition, no two expressions can ever be the same.

ISŌ (Phase)

ISŌ is a series that creates structure through the direction and symmetry of wood grain.

By layering the radial structure of the Rays pattern with the symmetry of bookmatching,
it forms a composition that appears uniform at first glance, yet holds an internal order.

As light shifts and the viewing angle changes,
the hidden structure gradually emerges,
bringing depth and subtle movement to what is essentially a flat surface.

This is not a design meant simply to be seen,
but one created to perceive structure.

In this piece, the complex figuring unique to camphor burl is fully embraced—
not to explicitly display the structure,
but to allow it to be quietly sensed.

Features

  • Complex and organic grain expression unique to camphor burl
  • Central symmetry created through bookmatching
  • Radial composition formed by the Rays pattern
  • A surface that appears monochromatic yet contains an internal structure
  • Subtle patterns that emerge depending on light and viewing angle
  • Irreproducible, as it is entirely defined by the individuality of the material

Material (Wood Veneer)

Unlike solid wood, veneer—thin slices of natural wood—allows only the most expressive parts of the grain to be selected and composed.

This piece uses burl wood from the root of the camphor tree.
Its naturally complex grain is restructured into a composed visual system.

Wood Species

  • Camphor Burl (Indigo Dyed)

The dense and intricate burl grain, combined with the depth of indigo dye,
creates a surface that appears calm, yet contains layered internal complexity.

Craftsmanship Beyond Machinery

This plate is created by MORI KOUGEI, a workshop in Tokushima specializing in veneer craftsmanship for three generations.

Applying techniques developed for architectural decorative plywood,
they have established a unique method of drawing patterns with wood itself.

By precisely aligning grain direction, symmetry, and material characteristics,
the work engages not only visual perception, but spatial awareness.

Each piece is meticulously handcrafted—something that cannot be achieved through mass production.

A Form That Integrates Into Space

The quiet presence of a round form

  • As a minimal plate that enhances food presentation
  • As a base for objects or floral arrangements
  • As a display element that introduces space and balance

It does not assert itself, yet holds a distinct presence,
elevating the atmosphere of the space.

The Beauty of Carefully Selected Natural Wood

Each piece carries its own unique expression.
Even with the same composition, no two will ever look alike.

Why It Makes a Meaningful Gift
