One of a Kind Marquetry Tray|No.2667

A grain-born expression that can never be recreated.

This is a one-of-a-kind work — never to be reproduced.
Even with the same composition, no two pieces share the same face.
The wood grain and the combination of materials ensure that every piece is entirely its own.

About This Piece

· A tessellation composition in which butterfly-shaped pieces fill the surface without gaps
· A rich contrast of color and tone from approximately 15 wood species
· A wide color range spanning cream white through deep black
· Repeating identical forms, yet the differing grain directions and colors bring movement to the surface
· Unreproducible — the expression is determined by the character of each material
· Even within the same composition, the placement of species gives each piece its own distinct face

About Tessellation

This piece is constructed using the technique of tessellation —
butterfly-shaped pieces of wood fitted together without gaps to fill the entire surface.
The repetition of a single form creates regularity across the surface as a whole,
while the varying grain direction, tone, and sheen of each individual piece
introduce an organic oscillation and movement within the ordered structure.

Just as M.C. Escher's prints unsettled the viewer's perception
through the repetition of identical forms,
this tray draws the boundary between regularity and irregularity through wood grain.
A composition that is calculated in structure,
yet sustained only by the individuality of its materials —
an expression that can only exist as a one-of-a-kind work.

Wood Species

Approximately 15 species of natural wood veneer are used in this piece.
Cream white, gold, red-brown, dark brown, and deep black —
species spanning a wide color range are cut into butterfly shapes and fitted together without gaps.
The same form repeats continuously, yet the contrast of grain direction and color
generates an organic movement and rhythm across the entire surface.

Precision Handcraft — Beyond the Reach of Machines

This tray is made by MORI KOUGEI, a workshop based in Tokushima that has specialized in wood veneer work for three generations. Drawing on decades of expertise in decorative panels for furniture and architecture, the atelier has established an artistic approach to drawing with wood.

Reading the angle of each join, the direction of the grain, the character of each species — none of this can be done without the experience and skill of a trained craftsperson.

Each piece is finished with care, relying on the sensitivity of the hand — work that mass production cannot replicate.

The Rectangle — A Form That Lives in Any Space

The Versatility of a Rectangular Tray

· A morning tray for bread and a cup
· A curated arrangement of your favorite vessels
· A resting place for keys, a vase, or incense at the entryway or on a shelf
· Paired with plants or objects as part of a living arrangement

The clean lines and inherent stability of this form make it easy to bring into daily life —
a piece with both quiet presence and practical scale.

The Beauty of Carefully Selected Natural Wood

Each piece carries its own distinct expression.
Even within the same design, the impression shifts entirely from one piece to the next.
