White Sycamore: Pale Maple for Furniture and Instruments
WOOD DICTIONARY
White sycamore is a candidate when you want a light-colored wood surface. The maple known as sycamore in Europe has a smooth texture and a history of use in furniture and musical instruments. There is a quiet character to discover within its pale tones. The photographs are examples of the color and grain associated with each wood or figure. Every piece of natural wood is different; the sheet you receive will not have exactly the same color or grain as the photographs.

This sycamore is a maple
Acer pseudoplatanus, called sycamore in Europe, belongs to Acer, the maple genus. It is native from central, eastern, and southern Europe toward the Caucasus. American sycamore in North America, on the other hand, belongs to the plane-tree group. Because the same English name can refer to different trees, reading it alongside the region and scientific name helps avoid confusion. Fine texture in pale cream
The British Forestry Commission describes sycamore wood as a pale cream approaching white, usually without strongly pronounced grain. Its ability to take a smooth surface has led to its use in furniture, fine woodworking, carving, and wooden vessels. Looking at the calm surface as a whole, rather than at color alone, helps reveal its character. Forestry Commission: Broadleaves (2nd edition, 1985, pp. 11–12)
Some sycamore has curly figure, appearing as wavy bands of light and dark. Such wood has been valued for decorative veneers and musical instruments. Not every sycamore, however, has pronounced curl. The key is to consider the species name separately from the figure present in an individual sheet. Forestry Commission: Broadleaves (2nd edition, 1985, pp. 11–12)
Where is it used in a violin?
Sycamore is used for backs and sides in the violin family. Going beyond the broad phrase “instrument wood” to understand which part it serves makes the material’s role clearer. This describes instrument timber in general; it does not mean paper-backed A4 veneer can replace the wooden plates of an instrument. A tree with winged seeds
A living sycamore forms a large, rounded crown and bears paired fruits whose wings spread into a V. The seeds spin as they fall and are carried by the wind. Following the name of a flat sheet of veneer back to a maple spreading its branches in a woodland or park is another pleasure of getting to know a material. A light-colored surface in A4 veneer
MORI KOUGEI offers quarter-cut sheets measuring 210 × 297 mm and approximately 0.25 mm thick. This surface material combines natural wood veneer with industrial washi paper. It can be used on small boxes and frames, to cover exposed wood edges, or for pale areas in marquetry, with the role of color and surface in mind. MORI KOUGEI: White Sycamore A4 Veneer Sheet
A substrate’s pattern may show through pale wood. Prepare a flat surface and test bonding and finishing on a small offcut before proceeding. The quarter-cut category does not guarantee lines of identical width or matching figure. Treat the photograph as one example of the wood’s appearance. MORI KOUGEI: White Sycamore A4 Veneer Sheet
