WOOD DICTIONARY

Walnut is familiar from furniture in calm, rich brown tones. The wood offered by MORI KOUGEI is the North American timber known as black walnut. Its dark color is striking, but not every part of the tree is dark brown. MORI KOUGEI: Walnut A4 Veneer Sheet / AHEC: American walnut

The story behind “black walnut”

The name black walnut refers to its dark timber and brown to nearly black bark. Although this walnut is native to North America, it is a different species from Persian walnut (Juglans regia), widely cultivated for edible nuts. The walnut used for wood and the tree that supplies walnuts for baking are not necessarily the same. Kew POWO: Juglans nigra

Dark heartwood, light sapwood

The heartwood ranges from light brown to a deep chocolate brown, sometimes with purplish streaks. By contrast, the sapwood near the outside of the trunk is creamy white. Different parts of the same tree can differ in color, so an important first step in understanding natural wood is not to assume a uniform shade from its name alone. AHEC: American walnut

The grain is generally straight, although wavy or curly figure also occurs. MORI KOUGEI offers quarter-cut and flat-cut veneer. Choosing a linear flow or a broader, spreading grain pattern changes the character of a piece even within the same color family. A single photograph cannot represent the full range of colors and patterns. AHEC: American walnut / MORI KOUGEI: Walnut A4 Veneer Sheet

Why it has long been used in furniture

Black walnut has been used for furniture, cabinets, architectural interiors, and decorative panels. Its suitability for natural finishes that reveal the grain is one reason it is valued as a timber. The attraction lies in the depth of the wood’s own color, rather than a dark color created by paint. USDA Wood Handbook: Black Walnut (p. 1–9)

In a small project, pairing walnut with a pale wood such as maple makes color contrast easy to explore. Covering the whole piece in walnut creates a different impression from using it only on an edge or a small detail. This is a design choice about proportion and combination, not a question of one wood being better than another.

A4 veneer: a way to apply the character of wood

MORI KOUGEI A4 sheets measure 210 × 297 mm and are approximately 0.25 mm thick. They combine natural wood veneer with an industrial washi-paper backing. As a surface material, they can be used on exposed furniture edges, for repairing or resurfacing flat wooden areas, and for marquetry. They are not intended to provide the structural strength of thick walnut timber. MORI KOUGEI: Walnut A4 Veneer Sheet

For repair work, an exact color match with existing furniture cannot be assumed. We recommend first testing a small offcut with your substrate, adhesive, and planned finish. Check the grain option and specifications on the product page to find a surface suited to your project. MORI KOUGEI: Walnut A4 Veneer Sheet
