Movingui Bookmatch: Composing a Symmetrical Wood Surface
Wood Dictionary
Movingui Bookmatch offers not only the surface character of Movingui but also a pattern composed by joining veneers. Bookmatch is not a species name: it is a method of opening and arranging veneer leaves like the pages of a book. Consider it for a surface where you want the grain to read as a complete picture. The photographs are examples of the color and grain associated with each wood or figure. Every piece of natural wood is different; the sheet you receive will not have exactly the same color or grain as the photographs.

Bookmatching is a method of arranging veneer
In bookmatching, consecutive veneer leaves are generally turned over alternately to create a mirror-like pattern across the join. The facing pages of an open book offer a helpful analogy. The term describes how a surface is composed, separately from the name of the wood itself. Columbia Forest Products Wood Species 101 / Columbia Forest Products Hardwood Plywood Grading Guide
Making use of Movingui's pale color and figure
Movingui, also called ayan, is a timber in the Fabaceae family. MORI KOUGEI highlights its pale color and curly figure. With a bookmatched product, look not only at the wood's own color and figure but also at how the pattern spreads across the joined surface. On a piece that shows the whole surface at once, such as a box lid or a small framed panel, the position of the pattern's center can guide the composition. Consider whether to align the join with the center of the object and how much margin to leave. This helps define the area of wood you want to show. Check the cutting position with a paper template before bonding.
Symmetrical grain does not guarantee identical shading
Because adjacent leaves in a bookmatch alternate between their two faces, a difference in light and dark appearance may occur. Arranging grain in a mirrored pattern is not the same as making both sides reflect light identically. General veneer references also describe this type of difference in shading. As natural wood, the shape and spread of the figure vary from product to product. “Bookmatch” does not mean that the pattern in the photograph is reproduced repeatedly. Choosing it for the broader idea of a symmetrical composition, rather than fixing every detail of the pattern in advance, leaves room to enjoy the individual material. Preserving the composition of the surface
MORI KOUGEI's A4 product uses quarter-cut veneer made into a sheet measuring 210 × 297 mm and approximately 0.25 mm thick, with industrial washi paper backing. It can be used for furniture edges, repairs to flat wooden surfaces, marquetry, and similar work. If you want to retain the bookmatched composition, examine the whole sheet before cutting it into small parts. MORI KOUGEI Movingui Bookmatch A4 Veneer Sheet
Prepare a flat substrate and test adhesion and the finished appearance on an offcut before proceeding. If you would rather arrange Movingui's color and grain freely than preserve a symmetrical pattern, compare the ordinary Movingui product. Choose for your intended use by considering both the wood's character and how the surface is composed. MORI KOUGEI Movingui Bookmatch A4 Veneer Sheet
