each plate tells a story.
Transforming everyday meals into richer moments —
MORI KOUGEI’s PLATE brings color and atmosphere into daily life, creating moments where every bite feels like part of a story.
STORY
MORI KOUGEI specializes in creating intricate wood grain patterns using veneer craftsmanship, and we continue to develop products that make full use of this expertise.
In 2020, we released our original product “RAYS TRAY,” which has been appreciated by many for its refined quality and artistic character that enhances everyday living.
Over time, we received practical questions regarding the RAYS TRAY, such as: “Can food be served directly on it?” “Is it washable?”
Listening carefully to these voices, we evolved the design into a simpler and more practical form.
You can now choose between two finishes: a highly durable Cerawood coating with excellent heat and water resistance, or a natural Japanese lacquer finish that reflects traditional craftsmanship.
Both finishes are suitable for direct food presentation and can be washed with water, making daily maintenance simple and practical. MORI KOUGEI’s PLATE is designed to transform the everyday dining table into something special — a piece that enriches life every time it is used. It is far more than just tableware.
A PLATE that is beautiful, functional, and designed to meet a wide range of needs — we invite you to make it a new standard for your dining table.
About Urushi Lacquer
The lacquer-finished PLATE is the result of a collaboration with Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi Store , bringing together the essence of Japanese traditional craftsmanship.
The delicate grain of the veneer harmonizes beautifully with the deep luster of urushi lacquer, creating a presence unique to this material combination. Only MORI KOUGEI could realize such a balance. Like all genuine lacquerware, the beauty of the PLATE deepens over time with use, while also offering practical durability for everyday life.
Its refined form and functionality are the result of skilled craftsmanship and originality. Designed to blend naturally into sophisticated dining spaces, it quietly enhances both daily meals and special occasions alike.
About Indigo Dyeing
The indigo-dyed PLATE is created using the traditional “fermentation vat” dyeing method with Japanese indigo cultivated in Tokushima. This product is the result of a collaboration between MORI KOUGEI and Watanabe’s , who oversee the entire process from cultivating indigo to preparing the dye vat.
The Cerawood finish provides excellent water and heat resistance, making it ideal for everyday use, while the vivid indigo tones deepen beautifully over time. By preserving the texture of natural wood, the PLATE offers a unique beauty that evolves with age — functioning both as practical tableware and as an artistic object that enriches daily dining.
RAYS Pattern
Using thinly sliced wood veneer, triangular veneer pieces are carefully assembled in a circular formation to create a radiant pattern that appears to emit light from the center.
Wood changes its appearance depending on the angle of light and the viewer’s perspective.
This delicate and refined design reveals different expressions depending on how the light interacts with the surface.
MARQUETRY
Marquetry is a traditional technique in which pieces of wood are precisely shaped and inlaid seamlessly together.
Using the natural beauty of wood grain, this craft technique creates intricate patterns and designs that have been appreciated around the world for centuries, evolving uniquely across cultures.
MORI KOUGEI possesses advanced expertise in veneer marquetry.
We can delicately express original illustrations and logos through wood grain itself, achieving highly precise inlays with seamless detail. Each work carries its own depth and story.
By combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary interpretation, MORI KOUGEI’s marquetry creates a unique aesthetic value suited to a wide variety of spaces.

[Wood Species]
・White Sycamore (RAYS Pattern)
A wood species characterized by shimmering figured grain running perpendicular to the wood grain direction. The figure becomes even more expressive when combined with indigo dyeing or natural lacquer, creating delicate ripple-like patterns across the surface of the PLATE.
・Magashiro (Marquetry)
Characterized by strong luster and an even grain structure. By combining the grain direction vertically and horizontally, the geometric pattern creates an optical illusion in which light and dark tones appear reversed depending on the viewing angle.
[Finishes]
・Cerawood : A high-performance topcoat with excellent water and heat resistance, highly resistant to stains and marks.
・Natural Urushi Lacquer : A refined finish using traditional Japanese lacquer craftsmanship, featuring deep color tones and natural luster.
Care Instructions
・Please wipe dry with a soft cloth after washing, as scratches or damage may allow moisture to penetrate the coating.
・Do not store while wet, as this may cause cracking or warping of the wood.
・Avoid storing in places with significant temperature or humidity changes, or in direct sunlight.
Notes Before Purchase
・Please note that actual product colors may appear slightly different depending on your monitor environment.
・Because natural wood is used, grain patterns and color tones vary from piece to piece.
・As each item is finished by hand, slight variations may occur.
・Returns are not accepted unless the product is defective.
・Although fully cured lacquer does not generally cause skin irritation, allergic reactions may rarely occur. If symptoms appear, please consult a medical professional.
