MORI KOUGEI tabletops are used at the Tokushima Prefecture booth at the Osaka-Kansai Expo.

At the currently ongoing Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, a custom wooden countertop produced by MORI KOUGEI is being used for the information counter at the Tokushima Prefecture booth within the Kansai Pavilion.

This countertop was produced at a large scale of φ2,500mm, and finished using MORI KOUGEI’s original “KOSEN-BARI (Radiant Veneer Pattern)” technique with white sycamore veneer applied across the surface.

KOSEN-BARI is a unique veneering method in which veneer pieces are cut into triangles and assembled radially from the center. This creates a delicate and visually striking expression in which the color and luster of the wood change depending on the angle of light and the viewer’s perspective.

For this project, the finish incorporates a deep blue tone inspired by Tokushima’s traditional indigo culture. Combined with the natural shimmer of the wood, it creates a calm yet powerful presence within the space.

The concrete base of the information counter was created by Tomohiko Kida (@ai_design_con) , known for his “Indigo Design Concrete” work. The overall design was created by Rikka Fujiwara (Kamiyama Marugoto College of Design, Technology and Entrepreneurship) and architect Yusuke Mizobata (VOID) .

Tokushima is a region blessed with a wide variety of traditional crafts and natural materials, including woodworking, washi paper, and indigo dyeing. This exhibition space combines these traditional techniques with contemporary architectural expression, becoming a symbolic example of “Tradition × Future.” MORI KOUGEI is deeply honored to contribute to a part of this project.

Through veneer and our original veneering techniques, we will continue pursuing craftsmanship that maximizes the beauty of natural materials while connecting people and spaces.
