ISŌ is a higher-tier one-of-a-kind series within the RAYS collection,
combining exceptionally rare figured materials with advanced veneer techniques.
If the standard RAYS series manipulates light through the direction of wood grain,
ISŌ further layers rare figured woods together with the technique of bookmatching,
revealing the most complex and beautiful expressions hidden within the material itself.
As the angle of light and the viewer’s perspective shift,
structures hidden within the surface quietly emerge.
This is a work meant not simply to be seen, but to be perceived.

Wood Species Used
This piece is crafted using Claro Walnut burl veneer.
Claro Walnut is a rare walnut species native to California,
and its burl figure develops over many years under unique growing conditions.
The result is an intricate and organic grain structure filled with swirling and eye-like patterns.
Only a very limited amount of such material reaches the market,
and veneer with this level of expression is exceptionally difficult to obtain.
Calculated Handcraft Beyond Machine Production
This tray is created by MORI KOUGEI, a workshop in Tokushima specializing in veneer craftsmanship for three generations.
Drawing from techniques originally developed for architectural and furniture-grade decorative plywood, MORI KOUGEI has established a unique artistic approach — “drawing patterns with wood.”
The angles of each veneer piece, the flow of the grain, and the individuality of every material
all require the trained eye and experience of skilled craftsmen.
Each tray is carefully finished by hand,
through delicate work guided by human sensitivity rather than mass production.
