Camphor Burl: Making Burl Figure the Focus of a Surface
WOOD DICTIONARY
Camphor burl, sold as kusukobu in Japanese, is a trade name emphasizing the burl figure of camphor wood. It is an option when you want more than straight lines on a box lid or a furniture detail. It helps to separate kusu, the wood name, from kobu, the description of its figure.

The photographs are examples of the color and grain associated with each wood or figure. Every piece of natural wood is different; the sheet you receive will not have exactly the same color or grain as the photographs.

“Burl” adds information about the figure
MORI KOUGEI offers burl-figured camphor under the name kusukobu. The Japan Wood Research Society’s glossary calls the figure around a swelling on a trunk kobu-moku, or burl figure in English. The trade name therefore tells you something a tree name alone cannot: what kind of visual character the wood offers. The same glossary describes tama-moku as a pattern in which growth rings appear circular or elliptical. Many figure names draw on visual comparisons, including burls, round forms, and bird’s eyes. Rather than substituting one figure name for another based only on appearance, consider the product’s stated category as well. Japan Wood Research Society: Glossary of Wood Properties (p. 10)
Another face of the camphor tree
The base tree, camphor, is a tall evergreen with a broad, rounded crown. Its wood has been used in buildings, furniture, and implements, and it has also been a source of camphor. Connecting a large tree seen in a town with the thin decorative material in your hands adds another layer of interest to its figure. The scent of camphor wood and the history of camphor production tell a story about trees and people. They do not guarantee an insect-repellent effect or lasting fragrance in this sheet. Choose camphor burl primarily as a surface material for showing off its pattern. MORI KOUGEI: Camphor Burl A4 Veneer Sheet
Deciding how much of the pattern to show
Camphor burl is natural wood veneer, not a print that mechanically repeats the same grain. If cutting small components, consider the pattern within each piece; if covering a box lid, consider the flow across the whole surface. Placing paper templates over the sheet can help you locate the most effective part of the figure. MORI KOUGEI: Camphor Burl A4 Veneer Sheet
Our regular camphor A4 veneer is offered in quarter-cut form. Whether you want ordered lines or figure with more movement will influence which camphor product you choose. If you plan to place several sheets side by side, do not assume the photographed pattern will continue across them; please discuss your desired layout with us. Applying thin figured wood to a substrate
A4 sheets measure 210 × 297 mm and are approximately 0.25 mm thick. Natural wood backed with industrial washi paper is intended for covering furniture edges, resurfacing or repairing flat wooden areas, and marquetry. It is not a burl block or thick solid board for carving. MORI KOUGEI: Camphor Burl A4 Veneer Sheet
Measure the surface on which you want to feature the figure first, then choose the substrate, adhesive, and finish before starting work. Because color and pattern vary from sheet to sheet, explaining the intended use and finished appearance when you ask for advice can help clarify your selection.
