Introducing Our New Wooden Plate Series “TSUKI-JIRI WOOD PLATE”
One of a Kind — To Admire. To Serve.
Beautiful wood grain plates that quietly elevate the main subject
[ABOUT]
“Tsuki-ita” refers to natural wood sliced paper-thin and used as a surface material for furniture and interiors.
Only carefully selected solid wood with beautiful grain and excellent condition is chosen to become veneer.
After these valuable woods are sliced down to their limit to create veneer sheets,
the remaining solid section is called “Tsuki-jiri.”
Tsuki-jiri are the thicker sections, approximately 10–20mm thick,
positioned above and below the hundreds of veneer sheets produced from a single block of wood.
Yet in most cases, only the thin veneer itself is used in furniture and interiors.
The tsuki-jiri sections rarely see the light of day,
often treated simply as leftover or excess material and discarded.
For many years, MORI KOUGEI has specialized in applying veneer to furniture and architectural interiors.
And one day, we stopped and thought:
“Although tsuki-jiri cannot become veneer or decorate the surfaces of furniture and interiors,
they are still flawless solid wood with naturally beautiful grain and color.
How wasteful it is to simply throw them away…”
Tsuki-jiri are also precious and valuable materials.
Each piece has its own individuality,
and every one is a rare, one-of-a-kind material.
These unique tsuki-jiri pieces are reborn as plates —
subtle supporting actors that beautifully complement the true stars:
food, tableware, and the moments shared around them.
Bringing overlooked materials back into the spotlight.
Simple in concept, yet inherently sustainable.
This project represents a new commitment and direction for MORI KOUGEI,
which celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2023.
