作り手のこだわり『市松模様』
市松模様をツキ板で制作する場合。
森工芸では作り方が大きく分けて2種類ある。
『木は光の角度で色が違って見える』という錯視効果を応用した1種類の木での市松模様を制作する場合。
隣り合わせる〼の木目方向の関係はは90度回転させている。
〼の辺に対して水平に木目を向けるか、対角に向けるかで別物になります。
画像の市松模様については後者ですが、説明しないと伝わりにくいこだわりがあるので今日は説明しようと思う。
単純に木目方向を対角に構成するだけではなく、木目をブックマッチで合わせてあるので、木目が全方位にシンメトリーになっています。
画像のホワイトアッシュ漆仕上げのプレートは、〼が36ブロックあるので36枚ブックマッチ。
ツキ板の束の中で、連続する同じ部分（木目）を正確に展開しているので、コントラストのはっきりとした柾目模様で菱形模様になります。
木目方向だけを構成するのであれば比較的容易ですが、あえて面倒な手段を選んで伝わりにくいこだわりがあったりするので、言葉で記す事にしてみました。
ブックマッチにするかしないかで作り方は変えていて、伸縮のある木でパターンを制作する場合に、模様を作るための手順が重要。『パターン毎に手順を自社開発しています』という話ですが言語化するのが大変なので、この画像を見た今、思いつきの勢いで書いています。
木目を合わせなくても美しい構成だが、伸縮のある木でパズルのように木目を合わせて、木目があった時の喜びと快感だけが対価のほとんど職人の自己満足ではありますが、この表現は木目の連続する『ツキ板』でなくてはできない表現。
同じ模様が連続すると言ってもわずかな変化があり、ミニマルな感じが個人的にツボ。

MORI KOUGEI-PLATE
When chequered patterns are produced using Tsukiita.
At MORI KOUGEI, there are two main types of production methods.
The chequered pattern is made from a single type of wood, based on the optical illusion that wood appears to have different colours depending on the angle of the light.
The relationship between the grain direction of neighbouring holders is rotated by 90 degrees.
Whether the grain is oriented horizontally to the edge of the Holder or diagonally is a different matter.
As for the chequered pattern in the image, it is the latter, but there are particulars that are difficult to convey without explanation, so I will try to explain them today.
The grain is symmetrical in all directions because the grain is book-matched, rather than simply configured diagonally in the grain direction.
The white ash lacquer-finished plate in the image is 36 book-matched because Holder has 36 blocks.
The same contiguous areas (grain) in the bundle of tsuki plates are developed precisely, so that they form a rhombic pattern with a distinctly contrasting vertical grain pattern.
It is relatively easy to construct only in the direction of the grain, but I dared to choose a troublesome means to describe it in words, because there are some particulars that are difficult to convey.
It is a beautiful composition even without matching the grain, but it is almost a craftsman's self-satisfaction that only the joy and pleasure of matching the grain like a puzzle with elastic wood and when the grain matches is the only consideration, but this expression is only possible with 'Tsuki-ita', which has a continuous grain.
Even though the same pattern is continuous, there are slight variations, and the minimalist feel is my personal favourite.
